Keeping Your Team Safe Around Excavators
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently reminded employers and operators about the risks of working with excavators and similar mobile plant. It’s a timely update, as unintended movements from these machines can cause serious injuries – even when they’re idling.
The danger is greatest when people are working close to the machine’s arc or near suspended loads. A small, unexpected movement can easily result in someone being struck, or a load swinging into the path of workers.
So, what should you and your teams be doing? The HSE’s advice is clear:
- Always use the safety control lever when the excavator is at rest.
- Make use of isolation devices if the machine is fitted with them.
- Plan and monitor activities carefully, making sure everyone understands their role and the risks.
For employers and dutyholders, the message is simple – ensure your workforce is trained, supervised, and supported with the right procedures in place. Regular risk assessments and clear communication with plant operators are vital steps in keeping your people safe.
These actions don’t just help you meet your legal duties; they protect the wellbeing of your workforce and reduce the likelihood of costly downtime caused by accidents.
If you operate or manage excavators, now is a good time to review your safety arrangements. Take a moment to remind your teams of these requirements and check that isolation and control devices are being used properly on site.
