The National Minimum Wage Has Increased: Are You Paying the Right Rate?

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW) rates increased on 1st April 2025, following the Government’s annual update.

It is a legal requirement for employers to pay all eligible employees and workers at least the correct minimum wage for their age or employment status. This applies across all pay periods, whether that’s weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Gross pay must meet or exceed the applicable rate when divided by the actual hours worked.

Current Rates from 1st April 2025:

Wage Band Rate
National Living Wage (21 and over) £12.21
18 to 20 year olds £10.00
Under 18s £7.55
Apprentices* £7.55

*Apprentice rate applies to those aged under 19, or 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship.

Failing to pay the correct minimum wage can have serious consequences — including financial penalties and reputational damage. It’s important to remember that minimum wage rules apply to a wide range of working arrangements, including:

  • Agency workers
  • Zero-hours contracts
  • Apprentices
  • Some self-employed individuals (where classed as ‘workers’)
  • Locums and casual staff

These workers can be found in industries such as healthcare, retail, construction, logistics, waste management, food packaging, and many more.
