An accident is a specific event that has unintentionally happened and results in property damage, injury, death or ill health of an employee or member of the public.
An incident in the workplace is an event that has unintentionally happened but may not result in harm or injury but may result in property damage or is worthy of recording.
The main difference between an accident and an incident is an “accident” results in personal injury or property damage while an “incident” does not result in personal injury.
Investigation of workplace accidents and incidents is an essential part of the management of health and safety and is a means used to prevent future accidents by determining the root cause.
When an incident occurs it is important to know the most important steps in the investigation process which include:
• Promptly responding to the incident;
• Planning an investigation;
• Gathering data and eyewitness accounts;
• Releasing the incident scene for further work;
• Analyzing the collected data;
• Creating an accident report and sharing your findings;
• Determining corrective steps;
• Making changes.
Following these steps will help you identify the chief causes of the incident as well as reducing the likelihood of it re-occurring.
It is a requirement of most health and safety standards, including ISO45001, that all accidents and incidents are reported, recorded and investigated so that appropriate corrective steps can be taken.
Accident and Incident reporting is the process of documenting worksite events that cause injuries, damage properties or are near misses.

• Provide medical assistance – Ensure the injured person receives medical attention.
• Record the incident – Document the details in the company accident book.
